Chocobo Breeding
In FF7's chocobo breeding, you'll need lots and lots of money, time and patience to get the ultimate gold chocobo with maxed stats. Oh! And also the Highwind. So I suggest that you start this long endeavor late at disk 2 or at disk 3. More detailed chocobo walkthroughs can be found in GameFAQs.
Make sure that you have the necessary items at hand. To be able to catch chocobos you need the chocobo materia. There's one at the chocobo ranch located south east of Kalm. Buy some greens since you'll also need it for capturing some chocobos. Also you need at least four stalls at the chocobo ranch to store your captured chocobos. Now that you have all the items, you can start capturing and breeding chocobos.
To start breeding, you need to capture a good chocobo and a great chocobo. You can find a good chocobo at the chocobo tracks south of the Gold Saucer area. Great chocobos are found in the Mideel area. Make sure that you catch one female and one male chocobo. If you want first to have a blue chocobo, get a great male chocobo and a good female chocobo. And if you want to have a green chocobo, get a great female chocobo and a good male chocobo. Move these chocobos from the fence in the chocobo ranch to the stalls you've rented.
Once you have both good and great chocobo, buy sylkis green from the chocobo sage. Get the most you can which is 99. Feed your chocobos only sylkis green to max out all stats. Feed the greens to both your chocobos until it says that nothing happened. Once you've used up all the sylkis greens, get more from the chocobo sage.
Once you've fed both chocobos and maxed out all their stats, head to the chocobo racing area at the Gold Saucer. Your chocobos would start at Class C. Race them till they reach Class S. Three wins in a class would raise your chocobos' class. So I suggest you take the short course.
Next thing you do is to mate your chocobos. But before doing this, make sure that you save your progress. Pick the great and the good chocobo and feed them a carob nut. If you have a male great chocobo and a female good chocobo, the chances are that you'll get a blue river chocobo. If you have a female great chocobo and a male good chocobo, then you'll get a green mountain chocobo. If their offspring is just a yellow chocobo, just soft reset your game, L1+R1+L2+R2+Sel+Start, until you get the chocobo you want. After getting one of those chocobos, set free both great and good chocobos. Repeat the process but this time, catch the opposite sex of the chocobos you caught. So if you caught a female great chocobo, this time, get a male great chocobo and if you caught a male great chocobo, get a female one. Feed them, then race them to Class S. Before mating the two new chocobo's you'll have to save. Make sure that the second chocobo offspring would be the opposite sex of the first chocobo offspring.
After getting one blue river chocobo and one green mountain chocobo, do as before, feeding them to maximum stats with sylkis green and racing them to Class S. After that mate the two chocobos again also with the carob nut. This should give you a champion black chocobo. If you want, you can set free your blue and green chocobo.
It's time to get a wonderful chocobo. The tracks southwest of the chocobo sage at the icicle area contains wonderful chocobo, though it's really rare to find one and usually you'll be getting a weak chocobo. After getting one wonderful chocobo which has the opposite sex as your breeded black chocobo, feed it sylkis green till you max out it's stats. Then you have to race it at the chocobo race in gold saucer till it reach Class S. Mate your black chocobo with the wonderful Class S chocobo with zeio nut.
If you have done all of the things above, you should have a champion gold chocobo with high speed, stamina, compatibility and intelligence.
