Appearance

A lot of people say that chocobos look like chicken or even sometimes canary. Actually, I would think not. Chocobos are definitely larger than chicken, maybe as large as an ostrich in order to carry the people in it's back. They have fairly large beaks and feathers sticking out on its head.

Generally, they are colored yellow, but on occasions, you can find some colored blue, red, black, white and gold. Through breeding, you can change the colors of chocobo's from the basic yellow, to the said colors. Breeding gives chocobos additional abilities and could only be done in Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 9.

The yellow chocobo is the basic colored chocobo. It can travel through open fields but can't cross rivers, mountains and oceans. The green chocobos (FF9) and red chocobos (FF7) are called the mountain chocobos. In addition to traveling in open fields, they can also travel over mountains. The blue (FF7) and light blue chocobos (FF9) are river chocobos. They can cross rivers and shallow water. The dark blue chocobos (FF9) are called the ocean chocobos. Like what the name says, they can cross oceans. The black chocobo (FF7) are the mountain and river chocobo. They both can cross mountains and rivers but not go into the ocean.

The gold chocobos of FF7 are different from the gold chocobos of FF9. In FF7, gold chocobos can go anywhere, cross rivers, mountains and even ocean. The chocobosfrom FF9 can also do all those stuff: cross rivers, mountains, oceans but in addition to that they can also fly.
